5 Easy Spreads for Breads

Now I don't know about you, but I love bread for breakfast or as a snack and I have started to make my own spreads to go along with it. So much better than most of what you can get in the supermarkets these days. All of these spreads are vegetarian and some of them are also suitable for vegans and all yield about 10 servings. So let's get to it!


1) Pesto cheese spread 

Ingredients:
  • 1-2 TBS of pesto sauce (for pasta)
  • 125g (1/2 a packet) of curd cheese/quark (cream cheese would also work)

Combine the quark and the pesto with a spoon and if you like add a bit of salt - done! Now that wasn't to bad, was it? ;) But absolutely worth it!

2) Egg spread

  • 1-2 cooked eggs (depending on how egg-y you like it)
  • 125g (1/2 a packet) of curd cheese/quark (cream cheese would also work)
  • 1 TBS mustard
  • 1 TBS parsley
  • salt and pepper to taste

Cut the egg in half and use your food processor to grind it.

Add the other ingredients and mix well with the food processor.

If the mixture tends to be too stiff just add a little bit of water, one tablespoon at a time, until you get to the desired consistency. Et voilà - spread number two is ready to be served.

 

3) Avocado spread (vegan)

  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 1 TBS of lemon juice
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • salt and pepper to taste

Cut the avocado, mince the garlic and put all ingredients in the food processor and hit the button for 1 minute or so. Add one or two tablespoons of water for a smoother consistency.

Ready to serve!


 

4) Chickpea spread (vegan)

  • 1/2 a can of cooked chickpeas
  • 1-2 TBS olive oil
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • salt an pepper to taste
Same as above: Mince the garlic and grind all ingredients in the food processor for one minute or two.

 

5) Chickpea and curry spread (vegan)

  • same as for number 4, plus
  • 1-2 teaspoons of mild yellow curry powder

Again - let you food processor do the work for you and enjoy afterwards :)

You see, it's very easy to make your own spreads that you can put on breads, in tortillas, sandwiches.... Use favourite or new ingredients and go crazy with it! You never know what might come out of it! I'm constantly getting new inspirations and I'm sure there'll be more like these in a future post.
